PUWER

How often should PUWER inspections take place?

Set inspection timing according to installation, deterioration, risk and exceptional circumstances rather than assuming one universal annual interval.

THE SHORT ANSWER

PUWER does not impose one interval for every item. Inspection is required after installation where safety depends on installation, at suitable intervals where deterioration could cause danger, and after exceptional circumstances liable to jeopardise safety.

Understanding puwer inspection frequency

Frequency depends on equipment, environment, intensity of use, deterioration mechanisms, manufacturer information, previous findings and consequence of failure.

Apply the requirements in proportion to the actual work equipment, use and risks, using current HSE guidance and competent advice.

A practical approach

Document the competent basis for each interval and define event triggers such as relocation, damage, major repair or extended inactivity.

Define responsibility, applicable criteria and escalation before collecting more data.

  • Installation inspection
  • Periodic inspection
  • Exceptional-circumstance checks
  • Recorded interval basis

Evidence and continual control

Review intervals when findings, failures or operating conditions change. A calendar anniversary should not substitute for risk-based reasoning.

Review exceptions and outcomes regularly so the process improves rather than becoming static administration.
