EQUIPMENT SAFETY GUIDE

Pre-use equipment inspections should help users recognise meaningful defects.

Define concise checks, clear reporting routes and stop-use criteria so equipment condition is considered before operation.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A pre-use inspection is a brief check by the user before operation to identify obvious defects or unsafe conditions. Its scope should reflect the equipment and risk and must not be confused with periodic competent inspection.

Purpose and limits

Pre-use checks can identify damage, missing guards, leaks, abnormal condition or unavailable safety devices before exposure occurs. They are particularly useful where condition can change between formal inspections.

They do not replace maintenance, statutory examination or competent periodic inspection. Users need training on both the checks and their limits.

Design usable checks

Keep the list short, equipment-specific and observable without unsafe intervention. Put checks in the natural sequence of approaching, preparing and operating the equipment.

Use explicit defect examples and avoid encouraging unqualified dismantling or testing.

Create a reliable defect route

Users should know how to stop use, identify the equipment, notify the responsible person and prevent accidental return to service. The report needs ownership and visible status.

Close the original concern only after suitable correction and verification, retaining the timeline for learning.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Pre-use equipment inspections FAQs

Must every pre-use check be recorded?

Recording needs depend on risk, equipment and organisational arrangements. Retained records can be valuable where evidence and follow-up are important.

Who carries out pre-use inspections?

Usually the trained equipment user, within a clearly defined scope and with escalation to competent people.

Is a pre-use check a PUWER inspection?

Not necessarily. A user check and a formal inspection can have different purposes, competence and record requirements.
