METROLOGICAL TRACEABILITY

Calibration traceability is a property of a measurement result—not a sticker or supplier name.

Understand the documented calibration chain, uncertainty contributions and reference standards that connect a result to a recognised reference.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Metrological traceability is the property of a measurement result whereby it can be related to a reference through a documented, unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to measurement uncertainty.

The traceability chain

The working instrument is compared with a reference standard, which is calibrated against a higher-level standard through one or more links. Each link needs documented results and uncertainty.

The chain ultimately relates the result to an appropriate recognised reference, often an SI unit where applicable.

Evidence of traceability

Evidence includes suitable calibration certificates, uniquely identified standards, valid status, method, conditions, uncertainty and a laboratory or in-house capability appropriate to the measurement.

A certificate logo alone does not show that the required quantity, range and uncertainty were within accredited scope.

In-house calibration

Internal calibration can be valid when competence, procedures, environmental conditions, standards, uncertainty and records are adequately controlled.

The organisation must understand the technical requirement and demonstrate that the comparison is fit for the intended measurement decision.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What is calibration traceability? FAQs

Is calibration traceability the same as an audit trail?

No. An audit trail records system activity; metrological traceability connects a measurement result to a reference through calibrations and uncertainty.

Does using a UKAS-accredited laboratory guarantee suitability?

Accreditation provides confidence within the laboratory's stated scope, but the customer must still select a suitable service and evaluate the result for intended use.

Can in-house calibration be traceable?

Yes, if the organisation controls competent methods, suitable reference standards, uncertainty and the documented calibration chain.
