CALIBRATION EVIDENCE

A calibration certificate is evidence to evaluate—not a pass sticker.

Learn which details support identity, traceability and technical review, and why a certificate must be assessed against the instrument's intended use.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A calibration certificate documents the item calibrated, method, conditions, results, measurement uncertainty and traceability information. It should be reviewed against requirements before the instrument is accepted for use.

Confirm identity and scope

Check the laboratory, certificate number, customer, instrument description, manufacturer, model, serial number, dates, location of calibration and method. Confirm accredited claims against the laboratory's applicable scope where accreditation is required.

A certificate cannot support your instrument if identity or covered range is ambiguous.

Review results and uncertainty

Read individual results, units, reference values, errors or corrections, as-found and as-left states, environmental conditions and stated measurement uncertainty.

A pass or conformity statement depends on specification and decision rule. Do not infer fitness solely from a calibration date.

Review traceability and approval

Look for reference standards or traceability statements, authorisation, amendments and any limitations. Preserve the original certificate and technical review decision.

If adjustment or failure occurred, assess measurements made since the previous acceptable calibration.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Calibration certificates explained FAQs

Does a calibration certificate always mean the instrument passed?

No. A certificate reports results; conformity may be stated only where requirements and a decision rule have been applied.

What is measurement uncertainty on a certificate?

It quantifies doubt associated with the reported measurement result and is important when evaluating suitability and conformity.

How should certificates be stored?

Keep the controlled original linked to the uniquely identified instrument, result review and relevant usage period.
